Welcome to Fish Trail. I’m Eugene Tim, a lifelong angling enthusiast, predator hunter, and the main voice behind this platform.

For me, fishing is far more than just a hobby – it is a lifelong passion, a constant learning process, and a way of life. I created this space to share my personal field experience, insights from my inner circle of trusted angling friends, and the practical technicalities of modern European freshwater fishing. My goal is simple: to help you skip the guesswork, understand fish behaviour, and experience the pure thrill of a solid take every time you hit the bank.

How It All Began: The Flying Gudgeon

My angling journey started in early childhood on a tiny, forgotten stream that fed into a small local lake. The creek was barely a metre wide and just as shallow, but to my young eyes, it held endless mysteries. It was my grandmother who first introduced me to the water. She taught me how to dig for earthworms and, crucially, how to properly hook them.

Armed with a rudimentary wooden rod, I baited my hook for the very first time and swung the line into the current. I didn’t have to wait long. The float bobbed and vanished. Overwhelmed with excitement, I struck with such absolute force that the poor fish came flying clean out of the water, soaring high through the air. My grandmother laughed about that for years, but that tiny, airborne gudgeon was my very first catch – and I was officially hooked.

The Turning Point: The Intruding Perch

For weeks, I returned to that tiny stream every single day, perfectly content catching those small gudgeons. I never expected to find anything else in such shallow water. But one afternoon, everything changed.

My float didn’t just bob; it vanished sideways with an aggressive, violent plunge. I set the hook, and my breath caught. The resistance on the other end was unlike anything I had felt before. The rod bent heavily, and my adrenaline spiked as I carefully landed a beautifully striped, surprisingly large perch. It had clearly travelled up from the main lake to hunt the local gudgeon population and stumbled upon my earthworm instead.

That single, hard-fighting perch completely transformed my relationship with the sport. From that day forward, wherever I travelled, a fishing rod was the very first thing I packed. If a destination had even a tiny patch of open water, I was going to fish it.

Decades of Multi-Disciplinary Experience

As the years passed, my curiosity grew alongside the size of my target species. I stopped just waiting for bites and started deeply studying fish habits, weather patterns, seasonal migrations, and venue topography.

My angling evolved across multiple disciplines:

• Lure Fishing & Spinning: I mastered the art of active predator hunting, targeting perch, zander, and northern pike across rivers and reservoirs.

• Livebaiting: I developed a deep understanding of natural presentations for cautious, heavily pressured predators.

• Feeder & Match Fishing: I transitioned into modern feeder tactics, refining rigs and bait mixes to consistently target crucian carp and specimen common carp.

• Specialised Specimen Hunting: My fascination with large, hard-fighting fish eventually led me to target silver carp – a powerful species that requires unique mid-water float and feeder systems – as well as tracking down massive Wels catfish.

Over the years, I’ve been fortunate enough to connect with some of the finest anglers in the community. We have swapped stories, shared hard-earned secrets, and analysed countless sessions by the water.

Angling knowledge shouldn’t be kept behind closed doors or buried under confusing marketing jargon. Fish Trail is my way of giving back to the community and ensuring that decades of collective experience don’t go to waste.
