The European perch (Perca fluviatilis) is one of Europe’s most popular freshwater predators. Found in lakes, rivers and canals, it is recognised by its dark vertical stripes, spiny dorsal fin and orange-red fins.
Perch feed on aquatic invertebrates and small fish, making them a rewarding target for both bait and lure anglers.
Worms, maggots and small baitfish are traditional choices. Small spinners, soft plastics and other artificial lures are equally effective, particularly when targeting actively feeding perch.
Look around weed edges, submerged structures, bridges and changes in depth. Larger perch often patrol nearby drop-offs and areas holding small fish.
Perch feed throughout the year, with daylight usually providing the best opportunities. Their preferred depths and feeding patterns change with the seasons.
