Lure Size
When fishing for zander, it is very important not to overdo the lure size. The structure of the zander’s mouth does not allow it to hunt large, wide-bodied prey effectively. Its main targets are small, slender fish such as gudgeon, ruffe, dace, and bleak. This predator will often prefer two or three small fish over one large fish that it would swallow only with difficulty.
For zander, slender lures from 4 to 10 cm long are optimal. You can start with 4 cm lures, and if perch become too active and keep interfering, increase the lure size.
Soft Plastic Lures
It is best to start zander fishing with paddle-tail shads. If there are no bites, switch to twisters, slugs, wobblers, and only then to spoons. This way you begin with the lures that usually have the highest chance of producing a bite. Still, zander can be unpredictable, and sometimes they prefer metal or hard-plastic lures, so those should also be tested.
Soft plastic lures are usually the best performers for zander and are the most common choice among experienced anglers. The most popular soft plastics are twisters and paddle-tail shads. Less common soft baits such as slugs, worms, crayfish imitations, and similar lures can also work well.
For a beginner or a spinning angler with limited experience, it is enough to keep twisters and paddle-tail shads in the tackle box. These lures can produce good results even with a simple steady retrieve. In other words, to make the lure move attractively and provoke zander to bite, you often only need to cast and turn the reel handle evenly.
Slugs and worms are a little more difficult, because their presentation requires special animation. They do not have active parts such as the tails on twisters and shads. The angler has to create all the action with the rod, the reel, or a combination of both.
When choosing a soft plastic lure, pay attention to the lure type, size, color, and manufacturer. A proven manufacturer usually produces a quality product that catches fish, while an unknown brand may produce an untested, poorly balanced lure that holds no interest for predators.
